Senator Patty Murray (D-WA)
In July 2009, Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) helped prevent passage of an NEA-opposed amendment that would have taken $100 million from professional teacher development and put it into a merit pay fund. Recognizing that teacher development is absolutely crucial to success in the classroom, Senator Murray led the charge against this amendment, which was ultimately defeated.
Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA)
Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) has long championed the NEA-supported cause of mandatory full funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), working to fulfill the Congressional pledge made more than 3 decades ago to fund 40 percent of the excess cost of educating children with disabilities. He also has been a leader for federal funding to improve and modernize school facilities, and, as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee for education has included $700 million in appropriations for school modernization. The NEA Fund congratulates Senator Harkin on his recent appointment as Chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions committee following the passing of Senator Kennedy and looks forward to continued work with Senator Harkin on critical issues to public education.
Congresswoman Judy Biggert (R-IL)
Congresswoman Judy Biggert (R-IL) has been a consistent and vocal opponent of private school voucher schemes which drain needed resources from public education. As a Republican member of the House Education and Labor Committee, she courageously maintained this stand – all while voucher supporters occupied the White House, controlled the Congress and ran the Education Committee. Recently, Biggert introduced NEA-endorsed legislation (H.R. 28) to expand and extend the federal tax deduction for educators’ out-of-pocket purchases of classroom supplies, and she continues to focus on much needed improvements in education and social services for homeless children.
